FAQ: Will your CRG-15 grip work with a fixed stock such as an A2 stock, Magpul MOE fixed stock, ACE Skeleton stock, Magpul PRS, etc.?
First off, please excuse this blogging platform and/or advertising and related stories at the bottom. This is an experiment and a quick way to create this page to answer your question.
Yes, but not like what you might expecting or probably would hope for. Fixed stocks do not allow enough room to get your hand around our grip because of the way they meet up with the buffer tube and the back of the receiver.
You can use the alternate end piece that comes with the Magpul MOE fixed stock to get a “little” room for your thumb, but it is very tight and not ideal. See next image below.
Our grip allows you to have what some people would call a “pistol style grasp” in that you can use your opposable thumb to wrap around the top of the grip. This is a photo from a customer using our grip with a Magpul fixed stock, but he modified the buffer tube so he could fix the stock further back and still wrap his thumb around it. See next two images below.
Keep in mind that buffer end plates with sling mounts, etc. will also interfere with the placement of your thumb around the backstrap of the grip. You need that area clear. See next two images.
Custom castle nuts get in the way also.
So in summary… If you want to benefit from a “thumb-over” hold, you will need a stock with some exposed buffer tube. On the AR-15 platform, you can wrap your thumb around the grip as long as you have the space available shown highlighted in yellow below. ie. exposed buffer tube with a pinned stock.
Here is a video showing how easy it can be to pin an adjustable Magpul stock with just a paperclip. In the description of that video is a link to another good video showing two other methods.
